As a child, I loved fairy tales (what little girl doesn’t), so when I saw a new series of fairy tales retold using animals as the main character, I was a bit skeptical. Honestly, isn’t a princess better than a poodle? Not necessarily.
The Poodle and the Pea by Charlotte Guillain is a hilarious retelling of the classic story “The Princess and the Pea” and is done in such an adorable way that readers of any age will find the story a new favorite. The pictures – of fancy poodles in appropriate royal attire – are precious, and the story is simplified making this a perfect book for beginning readers. Also, because animals are always cute, The Princess and the Poodle is much more approachable for young boys than the traditional “Princess and the Pea” version.
Another thing that I loved about this book is that Guillain doesn’t try to replace the original fairy tale. She simply has fun retelling a classic with adorable animals and keeps the story short and sweet. This is definitely worth adding to your child’s bookshelf – it will be as entertaining for you as it is for them.
